History and location

It was built as a replacement for the wooden Mokranj Bridge, which was destroyed in 1943, after the German World War II bombing. Dunav Bridge opened in 1959.

Initially, the bridge was named “Danube Bridge”. In 1962, it was renamed as “Danube Bridge – Second Class”, and during the time of military rule after the downfall of the communist regime in Serbia, it was renamed to “Danube Bridge – Civilian Bridge”. During the 2000s, it was renamed once again to “Belgrade Bridge”. Since the opening of the Sava Bridge, the first section of the first beltway of Belgrade, in 1998, the name was changed back.

At the time of construction, the project cost was 815 million dinars, and it was initially designed for six lanes, although only four lanes are currently in use. The project was initially designed for four-track suspension bridges, but the two lower lanes were eventually removed.

During the heavy protests at the end of October 2000, and riots in Belgrade after the assassination of Zoran Đinđić, the bridge was closed for two days. Traffic was diverted to the Mokranj Bridge, and on the following day, the bridge was closed completely, with the exception of the main span, which was only three years old.
