The Scout Project is an educational game written by Eric Minks of FunWorld for the Amstrad CPC, ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64. It was later ported to the BBC Micro and Acorn Electron.
The game is played by the player as a “Scout”, moving around the map, whose objective is to find and return three balloons of a certain colour to their bases. The player moves with the arrow keys. As the player gets closer to a base, a balloons appears on screen. When two balloons of different colours appear on screen, a scout is transported to another map.
Gameplay
The objective of the game is to return three balloons of a specific colour to their respective bases. The player travels around the map, either by moving with the arrow keys or by gliding around the map with a balloon. Each balloon of a particular colour can be picked up and carried to a specific balloon base. When a balloon is placed on a specific balloon base, it will be fired into space. As the player travels, they have to collect a certain number of balloons.
You start off with three balloons – two blanks and a gold-coloured balloon. You’ll need to find two blanks, three blue balloons, three yellow balloons, and a gold balloon to fulfill your goal.
There are four main game areas on the map:
Green area – Green balloons can only be picked up here. You can go in any direction, but there is only one exit point. This area is dead once the game begins.
Yellow area – This area houses most of the balloons. You can go left, right, or straight to the exit.
Blue area – This area also houses a few balloons. You can go left and right, but the exit is in the center.
Orange area – Most of the balloons are here. There is only one exit point. You can go left and right.
Start
You start off the game by moving with the arrow keys and picking up some blanks. Collecting the required number of balloons, you’ll be able to win the game.
Your goal is to collect the required number of balloons, but you have a limited supply of balloons. All you can carry is one at a time, and you have only three balloons to start the game with.
