okay, so i don’t have anything to say about this game as there is nothing i can say about it that hasn’t already been said by tumblr and the game’s own website and other places; well, except that a recent post where this was highlighted on giant bomb (with excellent commentary) motivated me to dust off my own copy (gotta have it unlocked for those mode 2 groups) which i played around in for a while before the mortal fall of liberty city (yeah, i really need to get that other ps3 version of the game).
if you liked the game, you will enjoy this mod. for the skeptical person, you may very well hate this mod. let me cut to the chase: the mod removes all the fundamental gameplay changes. you won’t feel like crap because you cannot scrounge anymore, you won’t find yourself wishing for the “bleak” mod (which added several gameplay tweaks), you won’t be filled with smug satisfaction when a mission goes perfectly, you won’t be highly sensitive to the tips i give about the game. but then, you probably never liked the game from the beginning.
the very nature of player-vs-environment conflict – enjoying the mechanical & tactical sophistication of dead island is about manipulating environmental obstacles to either create cover, defeat enemies, advance traps, etc, or exploit them as in a demolition derby. this mechanic is fun and it represents a powerful twist that takes gaming in a new direction. it wasn’t a bad game, but it was a vanilla game with a little modification, and it would have been even better if there were more features to this mechanic. nevertheless, this mod tries to provide just the fundamental tools that were deleted from the game, and the mods i have for other games do it even better.
